"Fragment 31" is an archaic Greek lyric poem, one of Sappho's most famous works and a hugely influential work for modern lyric poetry. Its depiction of desire rests on a tense social scene, in which a man sits closely with the speaker's beloved.

We have only scraps of Sappho's 16 books. Plato called her the Eighth Muse, but the Byzantine Christians found her openness and sexuality to be abhorrent. Sappho created the lyric poetry we know today, and few achieve Poems were set to music and sung, poets were bards that could fuel revolutions.
